Starbound developers are redesigning the Universe
"As we said before, the current progression is entirely temporary, existing to provide temporary gameplay whilst we work on the engine", the Chucklefish team explained this weekend on the official Starbound website.
The final version of the sandbox mmo will have three distinct Universe Sectors, rather than the current five, allowing one for the game's canon, one for PvP and a safe sector to allow you to get creative "without dangers".
Rather than the current, linear layout, the game will flow with a more open-world environment style, so you'll have to travel back and forth and prepare for each planet's respective hostilities in advance, rather than being lead in the right direction.
"We want players to be able to advance through the game whilst doing whatever they enjoy most."
To complement this open-world ethos, the developers are also creating a basic progression tree, which will supplement each player's favorite mmo archetypes; with farmers, adventurers and builders all being catered to.
Another big addition that's part of the Starbound overhaul is the inclusion of a new type of planet, called an "Outpost", which will act as a safe haven and area for you to develop your character and his trade.
