Star Citizen is a space simulation virtual worlds game from famed developer, Chris Roberts, and is his first game in over a decade of absence in videogame development. Star Citizen is set in a simultaneously cutthroat and collaborative persistent universe, where players can go solo on an epic space adventure, trade with others via multiplayer galactic diplomacy, or duke it out while piloting massive interstellar battleships. Star Citizen players will literally have a space sandbox to play in, letting them assume and change roles from pilot to merchant to smuggler to bounty hunter. According to Roberts, the game had been inspired by past space game classics such as Wing Commander and Privateer / Freelancer.
Star Citizen has gained famed for raising $6.23 million in pledges. It raised a total of $2.13 million via the crowd funding platform Kickstarter, beating virtually all other MMO Games or console games that have so far attempted to raise cash through the platform. It also raised another $4.1 million through his site, www.robertsspaceindustries.com.
Star Citizen is a dedicated PC game, and Roberts had been adamant that it is still a viable platform for videogames in the face of a titanic shift to mobile and social gaming. As a space simulation game, Star Citizen offers breathtaking realistic graphics and meticulously crafted environments that demand higher-end system requirements. The space game also has a sprawling, constantly evolving universe to explore with more than 100 star systems at launch. While there is an emphasis on doing your own thing, there are also mission campaigns that help a little to structure your play sessions.
Star Citizen plans to offer unique features that aren’t found in most other online games. Offline play will be available to those who purchase the game, for those times you don’t have an internet connection or choose not to connect and would rather shoot down enemy ships Wing Commander-style. Online play consists of interacting with other gamers who share the same persistent world. Competition and conflict are widespread, branching out to territorial disputes, merchant rivalries and other struggles for power. This makes friends extremely valuable in Star Citizen as your allies will help you gain some semblance of stability. You’re encouraged to seek out new allies and forge lasting friendships as part of a deeply immersive mmorpg action. Other ambitions plans include allowing creative types to inject user-generated content that can be enjoyed by the whole player base.
Due to its successful crowd funding, Star Citizen managed to splurge on voice and audio. It has hired celebrity voice-acting to flesh out the NPCs you will encounter and interact with throughout the virtual game. Full orchestral music also sets the mood for battleship skirmishes and deep space exploration.
