Musical creativity takes center stage in Star 86, the free virual game developed by Podscape. This kid-friendly game allows players to travel throughout the galaxy, all the while engaging in musical discovery and exploring their own creativity. Players begin by choosing an avatar called a Dubble. These creatures are alien in appearance, but also cute and non-threatening. Players can customize the appearance of these Dubbles to make them unique but this appearance isn't locked in. Players can change the features of their particular Dubble at any time.
Players explore the galaxy of Star 86 in their own personal starship. These starships start out with a basic structure, but players can modify their ship's layout in the future by spending coins in the shop. Players can purchase furniture, decorations, ship structural components, electronics, and more to have their ship be completely unique. The only limit is your imagination. Players can also spend coins in the shop to purchase additional customization choices for their Dubble, such as hats, glasses, outfits, badges, backpacks, and eye options.
Players gain coins in Star 86 by exploring various planets and traveling through space. When traveling to a new destination, the player's ship hurtles through a tunnel that is filled with musical notes. Players can maneuver their ships to hit the notes, which will result in gaining coins and playing music to accompany the player as they travel. There are quite a few planets open for exploration in this browser mmo, and each planet has their own specific them and mini-game to play. Players can collect coins and musical instruments s they explore the planet, which are of a smaller size so you can easily explore one. After collecting a minimum number of instruments, depending upon the planet, players can compose their own song and record it to share afterwards.
As each planet is unique, kids will find something new on each one. The Bobba Planet is an orange planet where players can engage in a hide-and-seek game. The first player to find the radar becomes "it", who then attempts to find the other players who are hiding. Those attempting to hide become a tree when they stand still, making it more interesting for the searching player. The Volcano Planet has a tropical tiki theme and the mini-game here is to avoid stepping on the lava when the volcano erupts. Other planets include a cowboy planet, a motorway planet, a ninja planet, a haunted planet, and more. Players can also pick up souvenirs unique to each planet.
Parents can rest easy while their children play Star 86 as the game takes safety extremely seriously. The game employs moderators to ensure that activity within the game remains friendly and safe. Parents have to activate the chat function and this is also filtered to remove offending words and phrases. Parents can also use the game's Facebook app to manage how their child plays the game, such as a daily play limit, setting a bed time, and being able to send your child a message while they're playing the game. This browser game is free to play, but there is a membership option that allows players to make movies and publish them, access to member only planets, a VIP zone, and in-game currency to spend in the shop.
