Elite Dangerous is a sci fi MMO virtual world developed and independently published by Frontier Developments. The game is part of the Elite series that was released back in 1984. It quickly became one of the most popular franchises that defined a new genre of games: space trading adventure in a large open world with massive user interaction but also significant single player content. Elite Dangerous is the fourth title in this series. The gameplay is similar to the previous installments but modern technologies allowed developers to improve old features and make it more accessible. One notable feature is that Elite Dangerous adventures take place in a universe designed after real star maps of the Milky Way galaxy.
Complete player freedom is the gameplay element that best describes Elite Dangerous. All users start the game with equal chances having no more than a bit of money and a basic space ship. Common game activities include trading, missions, bounties, combat or piracy. Players are responsible for their actions and most of them have consequences. There are game activities that are considered illegal. Elite Dangerous is a MMO virtual game that also offers quality single player content. Some quests have multiple endings that affect further game progression. Completing quests and missions allows players to learn more about the game’s story. Elite Dangerous is a sequel to the third Elite game that came out almost 10 years ago in 1995. Developers took into consideration that most players might not be familiar with the old Elite games so they designed a story that still makes sense for new users. Veteran players will be happy to encounter the Thargoids, an alien insect race from the first Elite game. Adventures take place in the year 3300. Interstellar travel is possible thanks to the fast hyperspace technology. Players will travel the entire galaxy, meet human and alien races, discover new planets and make their own Elite Dangerous adventure.
Elite Dangerous is not a free to play MMO game but the good news is that it doesn’t require a monthly subscription. Players pay a one time purchase fee and get to enjoy the game with no additional costs. Credits are in game currency obtained by taking part in Elite Dangerous activities. Multiplayer interaction allows users to team in groups. Players can be peaceful traders concerned with acquiring wealth or become space pirates, bounty hunters or outlaws. PvP is supported but there are rules to discourage aggressive acts. For example, those who abuse the PvP system get a bounty and become targets themselves. Elite Dangerous is available for Microsoft Windows but developers are open to the idea of releasing it on other operating systems as well.
