“Appear Offline” option coming to World of Warcraft, other Blizzard games
Soon, you can log on and play World of Warcraft in social stealth mode for those days when you’re not feeling so social. World of Warcraft developer Blizzard has confirmed development for an “Appear Offline” option for the online rpg’s cross-game ID system, Battle.net.
“When you choose this option as your status, all of your Real ID friends, BattleTag friends, and character-level friends will see you as “Offline” in their friends list whenever you’re logged into a game.” This expands on the available Battle.net social-status options of “Available,” “Busy,” and “Away.”
Currently, Battle.net alerts your entire friends list across all Blizzard games that you have logged on, but without the option to appear offline – a missing functionality that it now plans to deliver “in the coming months.”
The “Appear Offline” option is a common feature in chat messenger systems as well as social networking websites such as Facebook, and is usually valued by users who want a more private chat or browsing session.
For Blizzard, the “Appear Offline” option for Battle.net offers a similar convenience across its trio of MMO, strategy and action rpg titles, particularly “for those times when [players] want to wander Azeroth by their lonesome, dominate the galaxy in radio silence, or slay demons in solitude.”
