Skyrim Gameplay

Skyrim Gameplay
Overview

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, developed and published by Bethesda, is the fifth TES video game. Just like the previous Elder Scrolls games, Skyrim is an open world, nonlinear RPG. Players have multiple ways to complete quests and develop their characters. Skyrim is the name of the Tamriel province where adventures take place. The game world is huge and filled with surprises. Players can travel by foot, buy a horse, rent a carriage or use the quick travel feature. There are lots of Skyrim easter eggs so it’s worth exploring. At lower levels, when each mob encounter is challenging, exploring can be indeed a pain but, once you have a powerful character it’s pretty easy. Elder Scrolls games are all about lore. All over Skyrim, you will find lore books and each one tells a story that enriches the Skyrim experience.

Character customization is definitely one of Skyrim’s best features. There are no starting classes, only races. Each race has a special passive and active ability. Some races are best for starting a mage class and some are best for a warrior or thief but, race choice is not really important for character development. It’s best to decide on your play style (melee, archer, magic wielder, rogue, etc.) and choose a race that has a bonus for you preferred role. This will make your life a bit easier at lower levels. There also are jack of all  trades races that fit any role. Each Skyrim character has 3 stats and a set of skills. When leveling up, you gain a perk point that can be invested to boost a certain skill. Skyrim skills are related to using weapons (one and two handed weapons and bows), shields, different schools of magic and utility skills. One interesting thing about Skyrim is the XP mechanic. You don’t get XP points by killing mobs or completing quests. You get XP when leveling skills. Each gained skill level counts towards your general XP gain. This way, Skyrim RPG allows you to level up by performing your favorite activity. You can even level up by picking locks, pickpocketing NPCs and brewing potions but, at one point some combat skills will be required. Blacksmithing skill is important as well as it will give you the possibility to craft some of the finest Skyrim weapons and armors.

Mods are additional programs that diversify Skyrim gameplay. There are graphic mods that can totally change the visual appearance. Other mods add extra levels to buildings, more cooking recipes or help you manage your storage space. At the moment, there are 2 available Skyrim DLCs and one in preparation. The one thing Skyrim is missing is multiplayer. Whether this is a good or bad thing, is debatable. In May 2012, Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls MMO developed by ZeniMax. However, this is not the end of Elder Scrolls single player series. TESO will be a MMO set in Nirn (the fictional Elder Scroll planet) but will not be a Skyrim continuation.
