Shroud of the Avatar Forsaken Virtues, developed and published by Portalarium, is a fantasy MMORPG. This game company was started by none other than Richard Garriot (also known as Lord British). He is the man behind Ultima, one of the best RPG franchises of all times. His name alone is a great advertisement to the game. Richard Garriot was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award and has its own place in the Hall of Fame. Shroud of the Avatar has classic RPG mechanics and also MMO features. This way, it aims to please 2 categories of gamers: the old school RPG fans and players that like games with a social touch. However, Shroud of the Avatar is built around player’s choices not gear farming.
As Lord British stated a few times, Shroud of the Avatar is not an Ultima game and it has nothing to do with that franchise. On the other hand, Shroud of the Avatar is referred as the Ultimate RPG and is considered the “spiritual ancestor” of Ultima. A very important aspect of all RPG games is story. Games without good lore are often put aside even if they have great gameplay. The man in charge with Shroud of the Avatar lore is New York Times best selling author Tracy Hickman. He is famous for the Deathgate and Dragonlance series. Tracy Hickman is lead story designer for Shroud of the Avatar. Players will discover Shroud of the Avatar story and also experience their character’s personal adventure. This adventure is created by the players themselves through multiple choices and varied alternatives. Shroud of the Avatar doesn’t have a class system. Everyone will create a Shroud of the Avatar character at the beginning of the game but there is no class choice. Players can become adventurers, warriors, explorers or peaceful farmers. From this point of view, Shroud of the Avatar can be considered both an MMORPG and a virtual worlds game.
One of the most exciting Shroud of the Avatar features is player housing. Villages are basic Shroud of the Avatar settlements where players can own homes. Those who feel a bit more cosmopolitan should seek a house in a Shroud of the Avatar town. Cities are bigger and well protected Shroud of the Avatar settlements. Players that own a city house enjoy beautiful street views, protection and they can start an in game business. Purchase and maintenance costs are higher for homes in cities than for homes in villages or towns. Shroud of the Avatar online RPG has a crafting system. Players can craft anything from weapons to house decorations. There is Shroud of the Avatar PvE and PvP content. Adventure scenes are PvE scenarios that players can experience alone or with a group of buddies. For solo play, Shroud of the Avatar has an offline mode.
