Based upon the original Dreamcast and Gamecube series, Phantasy Star Online 2 is a free mmorpg that brings the classic gameplay to a new generation. This sci-fi game features action combat and has players choosing one of three different races to adventure in a beautifully visualized world. Players begin by choosing one of three races to play: Human, Newman, or Cast. Humans are the most balanced race overall and are considered jack-of-all-trades. Newmans are physically weaker than the other two races but have the greatest affinity to use photon arts (magic) to defeat their enemies and are unmatched in their resilience to photon arts used against them. Cast are fully robotic entities and have the greatest physical strength and constitution, but their robotic nature makes them extremely weak in the use of the photon arts. Each race has their own unique attributes and style.
There are three classes initially available to players in Phantasy Star Online 2: Hunter, Ranger, and Force. The Hunter is a master of melee combat and has a high capability for absorbing damage and using defensive abilities. Ranged combat is the area of expertise for the Ranger, who stalk the battlegrounds to unleash their assault from a comfortable distance. If the fighting gets close and personal, the Ranger can hold his own but is a far cry from the Hunter. Force players use the photon arts to harm enemies or to help allies. These users of the photon arts have powerful abilities but are very vulnerable to damage. Players can unlock three additional classes at level 30: Fighter, Gunner, and Techtor.
One of the unique aspects of this mmorpg game is that players can switch between classes within the main lobby, called the Arks. Each class has their unique xp total, stats, and skill trees, and it is possible for a player to max out the level of each class. Players can also set a subclass for their character and change that subclass as well. The subclass adds a portion of that particular class' stats and abilities. For example, a player can have a character currently adventuring as a Hunter with a subclass of Force.
Combat is the central feature of this game and it delivers it in spades. Combat is action oriented and players will seek out the most destructive combos that they can string together. Players will be attacking, blocking, dodging, and jumping as they strive to defeat their foes in Phantasy Star Online 2. Players will be battling it out on randomly generated maps with a number of different objectives based upon the current quest. If a player is feeling lonely, then can use their MAG, a personal robotic pet that has support capabilities and can transform into giant creatures to use more powerful abilities.
