Released in 2009, Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers is the first in a series of strategy RPG games from Wizards of the Coast based on the world’s most popular collectible card game, Magic the Gathering. As a powerful planeswalker with the ability to travel between realms, conjure spells and command creatures of immense power, you will fight with other planeswalkers in head-to-head card combat. The core game rules in Duels of the Planeswalkers are the same as the collectible card game, with a few tweaks. Players still form card decks with lands and spells, with lands providing mana resources with which to cast spells that summon ally creatures or other effects. A player wins when he or she manages to bring down his or her opponent’s life total to zero through a combination of creature attacks and direct spell damage.
There are three play modes in Duels of the Planeswalkers. The Campaign mode is aimed at beginners, with tutorials to get them acclimated to the rules. There is even an option to bias the shuffle of the computer decks to prevent them from reaching powerful key cards that will make it hard for players to win a game. The Challenge mode where players must analyze a given card game situation and plan a set of plays that will result in victory after a single turn. Then there is the co-operative play mode where human-controlled planeswalkers do battle against a single computer opponent. This co-operative play mode also allows for friendly human-vs.-human fights.
The biggest restriction to Duels of the Planeswalkers is that players of the former will not be able to form their own decks. All Duels of the Planeswalkers decks are pre-set and cannot be altered, unlike the real card game where customization based on your card preferences and playstyle is the standard practice. To compensate, Wizards of the Coast released additional downloadable content in the form of expansions that added new cards to existing decks, entirely new play decks and new challenges for the play modes. Three expansions have been released so far: Duel of the Dragon (2009), Eons of Evil (2010) and Master of Shadows (2010). What makes Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers appealing is its ease of play, visual flair and connectivity options. Decks are shuffled automatically and the videogame simulates the actual experience of laying down the cards in thematic tables, such as one of flowing magma and human skulls. But it is the prospect of challenging another player online, instead of trooping down to the local game store, which gives merit to this limited but multi-player-friendly digital version.
