HeroDex is a trading cards free to play MMO developed and published by Zero Separation. Players choose one of the 5 available HeroDex heroes and then build decks of cards for those heroes to use in online duels. Matches can be played vs. both AI controlled and human opponents either in PvP, co-operative or solo as the mood strikes you. A HeroDex match is fast-paced with simultaneous play meaning that even large matches take less than ten minutes. All new HeroDex players receive a hero and a starting deck that allows that Hero to venture into the world and win gold, glory, and more cards. The exact contents of the starting deck may vary from player to player but it will always contain everything you need to get started in the world.
Heroes are an important HeroDex game-play element. Using their heroes, players can move from one HeroDex location to another and enter matches. A HeroDex deck is built with cards. You are able to select cards for decks depending on your hero’s abilities and characteristics. The chosen hero will influence your HeroDex play style but the way you construct your deck is what really brings it to life. Just like in RPG games, there are 5 types of iconic heroes. Fighters are starting heroes and have a balanced play style. Warriors can equip better gear and have access to efficient training. Barbarian heroes possess great strength and endurance. They have good defense and are able to sustain incoming damage. Archers are HeroDex ranged heroes, they lack defensive capabilities but they make up by killing enemies from distance. Rangers have a flexible and versatile play style. All heroes have stats that relate to the 4 HeroDex cards categories. The higher your hero's stats the more cards you can fit into your deck and the greater the range of options you get in a match. Heroes and cards are both advanced by completing feats - a flexible and innovative advancement system that replaces the XP grind so common in MMOs.
The next most important HeroDex aspect is the cards in your decks. There are 4 HeroDex card types and 3 card rarities. Players can trade HeroDex cards with each other in-game. Depending on their rarity, cards can be black, silver or gold. Each card has an associated cost to place in your deck that is measured in points, and many have a limited number of times they can be used in a match. With training the points needed to add the card to a deck can be decreased, while crafting allows you to increase the number of times it can be used each match. Manoeuvre cards determine a hero’s position on the battle field. Heroes can approach their enemies for melee moves or stay at distance for ranged attacks. Action cards are abilities performed by heroes. These abilities can be offensive or defensive or a mixture of both. Equipment cards work like buffs. For example, when you use such a card you can temporarily increase defense, damage and so on. Defence cards are played when heroes take damage and are used to absorb the damage. If you ever take more damage than you have defence cards remaining then you are eliminated. A HeroDex match is played in rounds. An action, a manoeuvre and optionally an equipment card is played each round with each player deciding their move in secret (only their team can see what move they are planning) then everyone's move being revealed at once. HeroDex is a Java based MMORPG and runs well even on budget computers. HeroDex is currently available on both Windows and Linux, with Mac OS X support coming soon.
