Gwent Announces Thronebreaker Campaign and eSports League

Gwent Thronebreaker campaign announced

Who would have thought that Gwent, the card mini-game from The Witcher series, would become such a popular CCG mmo of its own? CD Projekt Red, like most gaming companies, is in Germany attending Gamescom, the world's largest gaming convention. Today, we got treated to some tasty tidbits to feast upon. First, the new single-player Gwent Thronebreakers campaign was announced. If that wasn't enough, CD Projekt Red also announced the formation of Gwent Masters, an eSports league for the popular CCG.

The Gwent Thronebreaker campaign is slated to be released later this year for the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. As befits being part of The Witcher universe, this expansion is filled with rainbows, prancing unicorns, and kittens playing with butterflies. We're kidding, of course. The Gwent Thronebreaker campaign tells the regal tale of Meve, a war-veteran queen of two Northern Realms. Meve is facing an imminent foreign invasion into her realm, so she is forced to once again enter the warpath and sets out on a dark journey of destruction and revenge. It'll be interesting to see the custom-made battles that twist the game's rules in unexpected ways.

As for devotees of eSports, the Gwent Masters should scratch that itch. This new league will feature official and sponsored events for mmorpg players to participate in. The Gwent Open features 8 tournaments with a prize pool of $25,000. This will be followed by the Gwent Challenger that has 4 tournaments and has a total prize pool of $100,000. The ultimate tournament is the Gwent World Masters, which boasts a prize pool of $250,000. You can learn more about the Gwent Masters eSports league here.
