Guild Wars 2 expansion in the works
Guild Wars 2 sales dipped by more than two-thirds to KRW36 trillion in the first quarter of 2013 from KRW119 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2012. As a result, net income dipped 49% from the previous quarter, according to the company's latest quarterly financial results.
But there were a lot of silver linings that should keep investors and fans breathing a sigh of relief. The rest of NCsoft’s mmorpg list performed solidly, with Lineage 1 and Aion sales increasing due to a combination of new subscribers and successful in-game item promotions. This, along with the launch of Blade & Soul and Guild Wars 2, allowed the company to actually post stronger sales and profits from the same period last year.
Observers should also avoid dismissing Guild Wars 2 as a game that’s on the decline. Despite the big drop in Guild Wars 2 sales, the buy-to-play online rpg actually contributed the second-highest sales in the NCsoft roster. Analysts are predicting that the company is gearing up to release a Guild Wars 2 expansion, which should renew interest in the game, attract new players, and boost sales figures.
When this new Guild Wars 2 expansion will launch is anyone’s guess, but NCsoft honchos have confirmed to some videogame media that an expansion is in the works.
