MMA Fighter to Take on CCP Devs at EVE Online Fanfest
In a move that will surely please their Viking ancestors, CCP devs will take on a MMA fighter at the EVE Online Fanfest. Yes, you read that right. A group of mmorpg developers will face off in a series of cage matches against Gunnar "Gunni" Nelson, a real life MMA competitor. The carnage will occur on May 2 of this year's three-day EVE Online Fanfest held in Iceland.
While some will think that this is just a publicity stunt, the actual truth may be somewhat different. Physical contests have been held before, such as the Brain vs Pain match back in 2011 that featured devs playing chess and boxing one another. While some CCP personnel are saying that the matches are serious and that the team has been working out for months, others have taken a more tongue-in-cheek approach, saying that they'll bring "flailing, half-strength maneuvers" to the cage match.
Luckily for the devs, the "EVE of Destruction" bouts are decided by submission, not knockout. Unluckily for the devs, Gunnar "Gunni" Nelson is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist who has won eight of his twelve matches by submission. His professional record is a tremendous 12-0-1. If I was a betting man, my money would be on Gunnar Nelson, but I honestly think that the CCP devs will give it a good shot.
You can watch the bouts live at the EVE Online Fanfest, which takes place May 1-3 in Reykjavik, Iceland, or you can stream the event for free. The event brings together fans of the popular mmo, EVE Online, from around the world in a massive celebration.
