gamescom 2013 featured hundreds of titles but two mmo games stood out to reap top honors from the jury.

Destiny was effectively proclaimed the top game this year by winning the Best of Gamescom award along with three other category prizes, including Best Console Game Sony PlayStation, Best Action Game and Best Online Multiplayer Game.

Destiny is a multi-hyphenate action rpg-shooter set in a sci-fi MMO-like open world being developed by Bungie and published by Activision. It is not to be confused with Ingle Games' Destiny Online.

Destiny drew praise for its cool concept, innovative features and impressive-looking Out Here in the Wild video teaser, which we've reposted show below.

Meanwhile, Elder Scrolls Online, the landmark online rpg installment for the critically acclaimed franchise, earned two awards: Best Role Playing Game and Best Social/Casual/Online Game.

Elder Scrolls Online has been brewing buzz for its adamant resistance to free to play -- it will require a $15 monthly subscription for continued play -- in order to deliver what it claims to be a more superior gaming experience to its fans. Many won't likely be deterred by the paid subscription though given the game's fanatic following, stunning graphics, and promise of a sprawling explorable world.
