Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 is the sequel to the card strategy and RPG game, Duels of the Planeswalkers that was released back in 2009 by Wizards of the Coast. Both this new title and the original are based on the world’s most popular collectible card game, Magic the Gathering. The core rules that govern the physical card game also apply to Duels of the Planeswalkers. Each player – called a planeswalker – still command a card deck consisting of pre-constructed lands and spells. Players take turns playing lands and spells, attacking and defending with their summoned creatures, until one reaches zero life. Life is reduced when summoned monsters attack and pierce through the defense to deal damage to the planeswalker player, or sometimes from a direct spell effect.
There are three campaign modes in Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012, each with eleven missions. The initial campaign is aimed at beginners, with tutorials for those new to the concept of the card game. The challenge campaign turns up the difficulty of the AI opponent for intermediate to advanced players. Meanwhile, the Archenemy mode is a four-player scenario where one power-enhanced planeswalker battles three others. After finishing the campaigns, players can take on mind-wracking puzzles that challenges one’s knowledge of the game’s mechanics and to achieve victory the next turn given a card situation in play. Compared to the original game where these puzzles were featured in their own mode, Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 provides these challenges as unlockable side missions for completing the three campaigns.
While there were no major changes to this new installment, slight improvements were rolled out to address issues in the first game. This included an option to remove unwanted cards from the pre-arranged decks. The interface was also cleaned-up to be more informative at a glance while keeping visual clutter to a minimum. Wizards of the Coast has also increased the synergies between Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 and physical card game to encourage sales. Purchasing the game earns the player some vouchers, which can be printed and claimed in local card game shops for exclusive card packs. These physical cards may then be used in official Magic the Gathering tournaments, depending on the scope of legality. Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 offers a few new upgrades, but manages to maintain the pick-up-and-play convenience and multiplayer fun that made its predecessor a hit.
