ESL announces Frankfurt 2014 DotA 2 tournament
Earlier today a mysterious link was dropped by competitive mmo games organizers ESL which led to nothing but a countdown timer. Moments ago, the timer expired and revealed ESL ONE, Frankfurt 2014.
The concept behind the tournament is simple; take the DotA 2 eSports scene, and place it on the largest platform possible. The platform of choice is the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt; one of the largest stadiums in Germany and famed for hosting the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
The Commerzbank Arena, known by European soccer fans as Waldstadion has a capacity of over 35,000 seats and ESL ONE plans on filling every one of them in their pioneering, new event.
“Dota 2 saw the first ever million dollar prize pool and this year I am pleased to say it will see its first ever packed stadium. With a capacity of over 35,000, ESL One Frankfurt 2014 is poised to be the largest eSports spectacle Dota 2 has ever seen,” said Managing Director of Pro Gaming, Ulrich Schulze.
The event currently has a $150,000 prize-pot, but mmo fans will be able to increase the pool by buying in-game items in DotA 2. The event is set to take place on June 28th and 29th, with the first batch of tickets going on sale later this week. This could be a defining moment for eSports, let us know if you're going to be one of the 35,000 that takes part.
