Dark Age of Camelot Gameplay
Overview

Launched in 2001, Dark Age of Camelot or DAOC for short is one of the few RPG games online to have stood the test of time, captivating fans for over a decade now with its strong storytelling elements, sprawling class roster, and groundbreaking realm vs. realm (RvR) combat. DAOC takes place in a world after the death of King Arthur and how his vast kingdom was split asunder into three rival realms – Albion, Midgard and Hibernia. Each of these realms is inspired by Arthurian lore (Albion), Norse mythology (Midgard), and Celtic folklore (Hibernia). Choosing one of these warring realms will dictate the type of races and classes available to you, so pick wisely.

While there are close to 50 classes in DAOC, these can be filtered down into four role-playing archetypes – close-range warriors, high-damage spell casters, stealth-capable rogues and the all-around support healers. There are hybrid classes that dip into two of these archetypes, which allow for a more versatile playstyle. In the higher levels, players can receive alternative advancement points that further differentiate their character from the masses. Alternative advancement is earned through a number of end-game activities such as completing world-spanning quest lines or participating in realm vs. realm combat.

While PvE activities such as questing and dungeon running are supported in Dark Age of Camelot, it is in RvR that it truly shines. Quick trivia: DAoC is widely credited for inventing the term RvR, an increasingly popular feature in MMO Games. RvR pits the three factions into a constant battle for control over relics, keeps and towers. This persistent battlefield which is open to all players in the server becomes a rallying point for realm unity and cooperation. Realm communities in DAoC are notoriously bonded and it takes little time for even a new player to start answering the call to arms of realm vs. realm. As a sort of training grounds for RvR, there are battlegrounds divided along proximal character levels of 1-4, 5-9 and so on. Players can jump into battlegrounds to get familiar with their skills, learn more about the playstyles of opponent classes on other realms, and learn how to work as a team with their realm allies. Why put so much effort on RvR? This is because dominance in RvR rewards a realm with some of the best passive bonuses in-game. MMORPG fans who seek actively balanced, ultra-competitive PvP should definitely take a closer look at Dark Age of Camelot.
