Civilization 5 is the fifth installment to the best-selling turn-based strategy game, Civilization, from Firaxis. Players begin the game assuming the role of a leader of a civilization spanning the ancient to modern eras, from the Aztec emperor Montezuma to the American president George Washington. There are a total of 18 civilizations to choose from with additional civilizations like Babylon and Polynesia can be downloaded separately. As the leader of your chosen civilization, you will nurture its growth over a thousand years. One of your first tasks is to found a city from which you will earn gold income, research technologies and accumulate culture grow your population. Cities are the lifeblood of your civilization, and you must develop and expand them to be able to reach one of many victory conditions.
One of the ways you can win in Civilization 5 is to conquer all the other civilizations in the game, whether they are controlled by the AI or other human players. Each game session has you competing with a set number of other civilizations on land and resources. You can choose to focus on developing a powerful army to invade all the other capital cities, which clinches you a military conquest victory. If you have a gentler take on things, then developing strong relationships with other civilizations can also be a path to success. Players can eventually put to vote who they think should be the world’s leader, and if you garner enough votes, then you will win through diplomacy. There are also the Utopia Project and Space Race victories which, respectively, require you to achieve a set of social policies and be the first to build a colony ship to a nearby planet. Remember though that other civilizations are working on their own victory conditions. If no one achieves a victory condition after a set time has passed, then the player with the highest score – a number computed by considering a civilization’s population count, technological advancement, wealth and general happiness, among other factors.
Compared to its latest predecessor, Civilization 5 allows cities to defend themselves better and has removed the ability to stack units in a single tile. There are also now independent city-states that are not part of any civilization, but can be conquered or turned into important allies for trade and diplomacy. But like past titles, Civilization 5 retains the most of the popular modding and multiplayer elements that the strategy RPG game is known for. The wealth of victory conditions in Civilization 5 and engrossing gameplay – either for solo or multiplayer campaigns – is what keeps players logged on for hours, saying to themselves “just one more turn!”
