Adventuring comes with rewards and risks in Albion Online, the free mmorpg developed by Sandbox Interactive. This fantasy-themed game focuses on PvP and GvG action in a true sandbox setting. As the player, you have the ability to play as you wish due to the unique nature of this game. You can also play where you wish as the game is a true cross platform mmo for the Mac, Windows, Linux, Android, and iOS.
One of the unique aspects of Albion Online is the classless system that it employs. There are no classes or levels in this mmorpg. Your abilities and skills are based totally upon the gear that you equip. You can play as a seasoned warrior, a powerful mage, a wily ranger, or a combination of all of the above. There are thousands of different combinations that the player can use. As there are no levels, there is no level grinding to frustrate the player. All items are created by players and there are six different tiers of items. Resources have a rarity that impacts the tier of the item being created, but rare resources can be found anywhere in the game, not just certain zones. While a player wearing rare gear is powerful, he can still be brought down by a group of low-tier players.
The combat in Albion Online is primarily focused on PvP and Guild-versus-Guild, but PvE is still present for those who wish it. In the game, there are over 800 territories that can be controlled by guilds. Once conquered, these territories can be built up as the guild builds a town or city. Guild can conquer neighboring territories by instigating a war, at which point both sides will send out their five best champions. This allows smaller guilds to stand up to numerically superior guilds. Another aspect of combat that harkens to older style game is full looting. If you die, you can be looted by the player that killed you. Thus you can have the reward of grabbing some rare gear from an enemy or having your favorite set snatched from you in defeat.
Albion Online is a true sandbox mmo as the world is empty except for the starting areas. It's up to the players to spread out across the world, gather resources, and build towns and cities. All the buildings and items in the game are crafted by players, and each player can build their own dwelling to safeguard their possessions. Player buildings can range from the humble tent all the way to a majestic palace. There are fifty different buildings in the game that can be built, ranging from storage buildings to those that produce items. Players will need to band together to build most buildings, thus ensuring a great deal of interaction and socializing. If you own a building used for industry, it can be used by all players, but you get to determine the price per usage.
If you're looking for a fantasy-themed sandbox mmo, then Albion Online should be your choice. Players definitely will have the biggest impact upon the game as the entire economy is player-based and that towns and cities will be player-created. You can play whatever you wish as long as you have the gear for it, but be careful not to be defeated and have your gear looted from you. Without the possibility of heartbreak, there isn't a sense of glorious triumph.
