Age of Empires Online stops producing new content, but developer says it isn't dying
The real-time strategy rpg game “has finished its development phase” so do not expect additional civilizations or features to arrive in the future.
Because of this announcement, some fans could not help but conclude that Age of Empires Online is on its deathbed. But developer Microsoft Studios was quick to dismiss such doomsday worries.
“Is Age of Empires Online dying? No. Nothing is changing for the existing game. You can still do all the things you do today; we’re not taking away anything you already have,” adding that players will get the same community and customer support as before. “You are still a valued customer, and will be as long as you are playing the game. We aren’t going away.”
This does burst the bubble of fans who thought Age of Empires Online will continue producing new content until the end of its life, similar to other mmo games. Microsoft Studios explained it could not sustain such a development pattern because of the huge cost of continually rolling out new civilizations and features.
“Why no more content? Because creating top-tier content, as we have been for the last year and a half, is very expensive—too expensive to maintain for long, as it turns out. We can no longer afford to keep creating it. Age of Empires Online already has a very large amount of high-quality, hand-crafted entertainment, and adding more is no longer cost-effective.
“While I wish that we had been able to add everything that we had wanted (especially a Roman civilization), I am very proud of the work that has been done to get to this point… But now we have finished building the world of Age of Empires Online. We hope that you will join us in playing there for a long time to come.”
