Tribes: Ascend development being turned over to the fans
Earlier this week it was revealed that content development for Tribes: Ascend had gone to the freezer, but now it seems that such development will soon be runing again. Except in this case, such development is being turned over to the fans as Hi-Rez Studios prepares to deliver a professional-grade map editor for the MMOFPS game in lieu of further developer updates. In statements made to Rock, Paper, Shotgun, studio CEO Todd Harris stated that “The one thing we’re going to be working on next is a path for users to basically add their own maps. We just feel like it’s at a good point to have users maintain it. We feel that it’s a complete experience, and we want to give users the tools to add their own maps – versus, say, us adding more guns that wouldn’t benefit [the experience].”
It's not currently known yet as to what form this will have, but the most likely option based on the comments is a full-blown SDK. As Harris continues: “There’s actually some community work ... that’s been started, and I expect more details from us in the next month.” Which is more that we can say for most games with shelved development from the production team, of course. However, there's no solid release timing at tne moment as Harris points out. “It’s not anything that has a date yet or a full feature set, but that’s the only real feature that we have in the works – aside from some small bug fixes.”
Hopefully this good news will be more than enough to satiate fans that were bummed out by this week's developments regarding content availability for Tribes: Ascend. We'll have more information on this new development in the evolving saga of the state of this particular game here at MMO Play, so keep it locked here for more information when available.
