PlanetSide 2 rolls out first Performance Update Patch
PlanetSide 2 has been considered a corner of the "holy trinity" of current MMOFPS games for quite some time, alongside CounterStrike and Team Fortress 2, and all this time it hasn't made a single performance tweak! Anyone who knows FPS games knows that the moment accusations of "broken" or "imbalance" are thrown at an FPS developer, they have to respond, or the players will migrate. Planetside 2 has held its ground for a year now, showing that it was already a solid game at launch and the devs knew what they were doing.
Bugs and annoyances have still crept through, however, and after almost 2 months of hard work PlanetSide 2 has its first performance update. Developers for the MMO first announced the update's intentions in September; titled the "Make Faster Game" initiative, and they have really stripped the game down to the core, eliminating any and all wasted screenspace and anything leeching at the frames-per-second, boasting framerate improvements of up to 30% in some areas. The campaign has been mostly about optimization, and will ensure that all of the work done by your computer is dedicted to running a slick game.
The development team worked through the night to get this patch launched in time and, although they're proud of it, they're already looking at the next areas of improvement.
PlanetSide 2's Technical Director told the troops:
"Over the next few weeks, we will likely release a hotfix build or two. We will also be giving you more information about our long-term plans and where our efforts will be focused going forwards."
The 10,000 contributors that all helped out on the public test servers have all been granted a 3-day 50% experience boost, as thanks for their feedback.
