PlanetSide 2 now playable in NA, Europe
Arguably the biggest and most anticipated freemium MMOFPS game of the year has launched for PC systems on both sides of the Atlantic.
PlanetSide 2 is the long-awaited sequel to PlanetSide, improving on its signature massive combat engagements whether in the air or on the ground, or whether in vehicles or in classic hand-to-hand brawls.
“PlanetSide 2 sets the new standard for shooters,” said John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainmen (SOE), which develops the popular shooter series. “With thousands of players fighting simultaneously across several beautiful, massive continents, the size and intensity of PlanetSide 2 has no equal. You’ve never played anything like it.”
Players can choose from six available classes and swear allegiance to several distinct Empires. Territorial skirmishes will break out across three “enormous” continents – Indar, Esamir and Amerish -- which have been made more visually arresting through a new SOE proprietary mmo games engine called ForgeLight.
“PlanetSide 2 offers a truly competitive and visceral FPS experience with massive warfare, massive customization and massive community,” said SOE in the launch release.
The game also boasts of an extensive skill tree and free-form class-based system, which will allow players “to customize their soldier, weapons and vehicles to match their playstyle, as well as the needs of their squad, outfit or empire.”
Battles can last for days or weeks, so players will need to build alliances and specialized combat outfits to take on long-term strategic and tactical initiatives. With aircraft and ground vehicles, as well as infantry combat, the battles will be larger and more intense than ever before,” adds SOE.
PlanetSide will operate under the “Free-to-Play. Your Way” model, which is basically a freemium model with paid Premium Membership options starting at $9.99 a month with scalable gains for resources, XP and passive cert points, among other membership perks.
