PlanetSide is an action MMOFPS published by Sony Online Entertainment. It takes place in a sci-fi world on a planet named Auraxis where a group of human colonists discovered the remains of a superior alien race called the Vanu and their technology. Unexpected events prevent the colonists from leaving Auraxis and their ideological conflicts led to a division and ultimately war. The Terran Republic (TR) concentrates its efforts on preserving the form of organization from their homeland. They are also trying to find a way to leave Auraxis as they believe the Vanu technology is something too powerful to be toyed with. The New Conglomerate (NC) acts as the iconic rebel faction. They fight for freedom from the Republic. Their stand toward the alien technology is ambivalent as they see it as a valid mean to achieve their purpose. The Vanu Sovereignty (VS) believes the future of mankind is the total embrace of the Vanu technology that will someday allow them to ascend to a godlike status.
As a character in PlanetSide, you will have to pick one of the 3 sides. Because PlanetSide has a FPS core, the main differences will be about weapons and armor. The TR weapons are characterized by faster attack and vehicle speed with moderate damage and armor. The NC compensates by adding heavy armor and the VS rely almost entirely on alien technology with high energy weapons. PlanetSide has a certification system that allows the players to specialize in Combat (weapons and armor), Vehicles (the ability to control a vehicle) and Support (non-combat perks that strengthen a character). While some of the items, gear, armor and vehicles in PlanetSide are available to all classes most of them are restricted to a certain faction. A character may gain access to some of the enemy resources (mainly vehicles) by allocating specialization points through the certification system. A PlanetSide character advances through a classic leveling process and has three ways to gain experience: Battle Experience (awarded from killing an enemy player), Support Experience (assisting a fellow player) and Command Experience (successfully leading a team). Gaining a rank (level) in Battle and Support (40 ranks maximum) will reward you with certification points that can be used to upgrade abilities or access better gear. Command XP counts towards Command Ranks (5 in total) and will reward team perks. The main goal in PlanetSide is for one faction to control more bases, objectives and facilities than the other two. The battles take place on land and air (with the use of aircrafts) and the varied maps allow a multitude of winning strategies.
PlanetSide provides a true MMO experience when teaming with other players. A 10 man party is called a squad and 2 or 3 squads can join to form a platoon of maximum 30 players. Players can organize themselves into clans (or guilds) called Outfits. Since its release in 2003 PlanetSide had one expansion and several patches that added content and new features and in July 2011 the sequel PlanetSide 2 has been announced.
