MechWarrior Online's "Sarah's Mech" Raises $122,200 for Charity
The folks at Piranha Games recently proved how gigantic their hearts are by creating a new MechWarrior Online Mech, "Sarah's 'Mech," to honor the passing of five-year-old cancer victim Sarah Marie Alida Parries. The Mech would sell for $10, and all profit would go to the Canadian Cancer Society.
MechWarrior Online players answered the call, collectively raising over $122,200 between July 23 and August 20. This money will be presented to the Canadian Cancer Society at a special ceremony on August 23 featuring members of Sarah's family and representatives from the Cancer Society.
Sarah would watch her father play MechWarrior Online, and would call enemy mechs "baddies." Her favorite mech type was the Jenner, so this provided the base for Sarah's 'Mech. The exterior was decorated with the things she loved, like rainbows, band-aids, and teddy bears.
Scott Fairbairn, Director, Corporate Development at the Canadian Cancer Society, offered a huge thank you to the MechWarrior fan base: “The money raised in tribute to Sarah serves as an inspiration for all of us,” explained . “It speaks to the strong sense of community evident in players of MechWarrior but also clearly demonstrates how this story has touched the broader community resulting in a legacy of hope in contrast to the sadness we all feel with Sarah’s passing.”
In such a tragedy, it's nice to see people band together like this and do some good. And the fact that this came together because of an online video game makes us all proud to be called gamers.
