Borderlands 2 breaks the 5 million sales mark
The blockbuster console and PC shooter is set to overshadow even the most popular mmofps games in terms of popularity.
In just less than two months since launching in September, Borderlands 2 has shipped more than 5 million units worldwide, according to an ecstatic press release from 2K and Gearbox Software, a feat that makes it “one of the most popular video games of the year.”
“The Borderlands series has never been more popular, and with continued support through substantial add-on campaigns, Borderlands 2 has cemented itself as one of the industry’s mega franchises,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K.
The latest milestone adds to a growing list of sales accolades for the game. During its release month in September, it ranked number 2 in sales just behind Madden NFL 13 with around 1.5 million box sales. It outsold popular mmorpg releases like Guild Wars 2 and World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, and fellow fps titles like Battlefield 3.
Since then Borderlands 2 sales have been sustained due in part to an aggressive content roll-out schedule. It has already released the Mechromancer character class as well as the Captain Scarlett and her Pirate’s Booty add-on campaign.
Borderlands 2 developers hope to keep the sales momentum going with plans to release three new add-on campaigns in the coming months.
