Rumor: Is Gears of War Studio, Epic Games, Making an MMO?
Epic Games, the studio behind the Unreal Engine and the blockbuster Gears of War series, is currently looking to add some new employees to their staff. They recently posted a job listing for Senior Systems Designers for two projects currently in the works.
One project is Fortnite, the cartoony survival game they announced at the Spike TV VGAs back in December of 2011. The other, though, is "an unannounced competitive online action game that includes player progression, heavy itemization, and a dynamic economy."
The description has led some people, like the folks at GameSkinny, to wonder if this will turn out to be a new MMO, some even going as far as to speculate about a potential Gears of War MMO. While a Gears of War MMO seems unlikely, the description certainly points toward some sort of multiplayer shooter, potentially a new MMOFPS.
The listing also claims the ideal candidate will have "Experience and Passion for building and/or playing Shooters, MMO’s, RPG’s, or RTS games." While the first three of the listed game genres would lend credence to the idea of an MMOFPS, the mention of the real-time strategy genre points to something a bit different. A MOBA perhaps?
Whatever this project ends up being, it's probably safe to assume it will be built in Unreal 4 and will show up on next-gen consoles. We'll give you more details as we learn them.
