Spiral Knights is a free-to-play, no download mmorpg from developer Three Rings Design and publisher Sega. Players get to control a knight hero in the hostile planet of Cradle. As a member of the Spiral Knights order which has just crash-landed into the strange new world filled aggressive foreign creatures. You will spend much of the game exploring the mysterious Clockworks dungeon, whose map layout and features change with every entry, similar to the random dungeon generator system used in action rpg games like Diablo. Exploring the vast subterranean core of Cradle will reap you precious weapons, armor, crowns (the main currency in the game), crafting materials and other useful items.
It’s not all about dungeon running in Spiral Knights. There is a thriving aboveground economy in Haven, and players who are not busy mining the depths of dungeons for ever rarer loot can spend some quality recreation within the walls of this mining outpost. Haven functions as a city hub; you can purchase new items or create your own special gear through the power of alchemy. Or go make some friends since Haven is host to all other human players. Spiral Knights supports cooperative MMO play. You can team up with three other knights to form a four-man exploration squad. Items looted during the dungeon run are split between the members with an easy-to-use chat channel allowing for quick organization and communication. A friend system also lets you keep track of new and previous teammates, as well as random buddies you’ve met in Cradle. Those who want to be a part of a greater organization can form a new Guild or join an existing one. Each Guild is given a private guild hall where they can meet up, trade tips and just hang out. Players can even amuse each other by competing in mini-games, such as Blast Network which is patterned after the class Bomberman block destruction game.
Spiral Knights offers a fun and frenetic combat experience. It even borders on addictive for players who are into endless dungeon exploration and item collection, seeking for ever more powerful drops. This obsession with items comes from the game’s pared-down character progression system. Your knight does not earn experience or even have hit points; he simply starts out with 0-star equipment with the goal of improving to a 5-star set. Like most Browser Games, Spiral Knights is free to play but offers benefits to cash shop purchasers. In this instance, players can buy Crystal Energy which allows them to perform more actions and tasks in-game compared to free players, which can only use up a smaller stock of Mist Energy that only replenishes gradually to full every 22 hours or so.
