Old school Runescape servers voted to remain active

runescape old school servers continue running

After receiving more than 180,000 votes to-date, old school Runescape servers will continue operating for fans who want to play the 2007 version of the browser mmo.

Old school Runescape servers provide a playable version of the free mmorpg half a decade ago, along with the graphics, hi-scores, vibe and rules. Micropayments will also be non-existent in these old school servers.

Jagex had mentioned before that it would require at least 50,000 member votes to keep the old school servers running as a paid feature but with no content updates and “only critical maintenance” assigned to it. Hitting certain milestones – 250,000, 500,000 and 750,000 – would increase the level of service and lower the monthly costs given to old school servers.

If and when votes reach the 250,000 mark -- which seems doable despite less than two weeks left before voting ends at 00:00 GMT on 1st March 2013 – Jagex will then assign a “small” development team to provide “little” improvements and bug fixes, as well as a smaller membership fee of roughly $5, down from $15.

Reaching 500,000 votes and 750,000 votes will remove the membership entirely and significantly enlarge the development team assigned to old school Runescape.

So if you have not cast your vote yet, Runescape fans are encouraged to throw their vote behind the old school servers. As an added incentive, those who give their support will receive a free first month once the old school servers go live again.
