According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Runescape is the most popular browser-based MMORPG of all time. The multi-award winning free to play MMORPG game is arguably one of the most expansive browser games available on the internet, featuring a unique quest system, classless character progression and over 20 different skills and abilities to focus on. These features have paved the way for Runescape to be such a popular title.
The questing system in Runescape 3 is not like other MMORPG games, players are not forced to complete quests for experience points or to grind. Instead each quest has an in-depth story accompanied by unique NPC's and quest dialogue. The main focus of quests in Runescape is the rewards, many of the quests require weeks of work to be able to complete, and reward players with some of the best items in the game.
Runescape 3 skill system shares more similarities with a sandbox game instead of an MMO, players have total freedom to invest their time into any skills they want. You're not punished with restrictions or limitations. There's a huge variety of skills, some of which are combat based such as strength, damage and magic while others are resource and construction based. The economy and items in Runescape are mainly player created, you can create everything from the sword and armor you wield to the pies and food you eat to keep you alive. Every skill requires certain ingredients or items to advance, you can create the majority of them yourself, removing the need to rely on the auction house or other players.
Another area Runescape 3 excels in is PvP. There are plenty of various PvP options, from objective based mini-games to total anarchy in the Wilderness. The Wilderness is a large area within Runescape where players can attack others freely, with all items, bar 3, being dropped upon death. This severe death penalty creates for pulse pounding fights where 1 slight mistake can cost you millions of gold.
Unlike previous versions, Runescape 3 allowed for Controller support, improved audio, customizable interfaces and offered a player-driven storyline featuring world events over a three month period.
